ARE ELEPHANTS SELF-AWARE?

November 2006

One of the tests animal behaviourists use to study self-awareness in animals is to put a mark on a sleeping animal and then see if it tries to touch the mark when it wakes and looks in a mirror. Such work has mainly been done on primates, but a new study shows that at least one elephant can “pass” the mirror test…

BBC summary article here; PDF of original article here; movies of elephants here (Movie 3 has elephant trying to touch mark); my summary of this article, published in Journal of Experimental Biology here.
