Although natural history TV programmes often focus on organisms eating each other (which of course they do a great deal), cooperation is also a fundamental feature of life, particularly in the way that ecology and evolution interact. This open access article from Current Biology looks at both the theory (only one equation, and that’s the one you should all know – “Hamilton’s rule”) and the experimental evidence:
